The predecessor of the new National Science Council was the National Science Committee of the Executive Yuan in 1959, and it was restructured into the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2014. In the past, it shouldered the three major missions of promoting the overall scientific and technological development of the country, supporting academic basic research, and developing science parks. In addition, innovation and entrepreneurship are added to the promotion goals. Today's New National Science Association not only undertakes the past mission, but Chairman Wu Zhengzhong also proposed the following four points for the future direction of the new National Science Association: 1. Cross-ministerial cooperation to deploy emerging technologies and industries Although Taiwan is small and its technology budget is not as good as that of foreign countries, the cooperation model of high efficiency and precise connection between Taiwan ministries and associations will become the biggest advantage when competing with foreign countries. "Inter-ministerial meeting" communication is not only the goal of the new National Science and Technology Association in the future, but also the core thinking structure of the new number list National Science and Technology Association. 2. Foundation-laying of basic academic research Looking back at Taiwan's COVID-19 prevention results in the past two years, basic scientific research has always been a strong backing for technology development, whether in viral medicine or vaccine research and development; space, or artificial intelligence, the basic research and international interaction of science and technology will be the development direction National Science Association will focus on. 3. Create a sophisticated and diverse life science park In the past, the semiconductor industry has laid a solid foundation for Taiwan. The output value of the science and technology park has grown from 2.7 trillion to 3.7 trillion in 2021, but in addition to semiconductors, other industries also need to be deployed, especially Key industries "close to life" such as precision health, smart agricultural medicine, electric vehicles, space technology, and low-orbit satellites. 4. The Humanistic and Social Value of Practising Technology As technology and life draw closer, future technological development will inevitably need to be continuously connected with social needs and the environment, and respond to changes in the external social environment; The proportion of investment in science and technology will be the goal that the new National Science Council wants to strengthen in the future.
